[...] “…ultimately, the most important aspect of both Sarah Palin’s and Michelle Obama’s impact will be a subtle yet powerful shift away from the “balance” mindset and the “all or nothing” work life dichotomy that drew the battle lines of the unwinnable mommy wars. They have the power to usher in the post-balance era of countless work life fit choices based upon our unique work and personal realities, and finally begin a productive discussion about the way work is done, life is managed, and business operates.” (more) [...]

Thank you Sharon and Juliana, the purpose of this post was specifically about the non-political mindset-shift that I believe will be important. However, you are correct that the specific political positions of the candidates are also important to understand. I participated in a series of calls recently in which each campaign presented their policy platform regarding work life issues. I wanted to wait until I knew more specifics before I commented, and I will be blogging about those calls in the next week or so. The hold up has been that the campaigns requestd that all bloggers wait until the transcripts of the calls are available for public review. I have agreed to honor that request. So stay tuned...and thanks so much for your comments.

Best

Cali, This was a great article from a non political perspective, yet politics will have an enormous impact on future policies that will affect our and our children's future.

Work+life fit is based on making choices in our lives, yet under Sarah Palin's watch, reproductive choice will be lost. Name the issue, including portable health care, pensions, paid sick and dependent care leave, child care and eldercare, because if you actually listen to Sarah Palin, it's clear that she does not truly support these issues. I don't see her as a woman who made a work+life fit, I only see a person who will destroy other people's work+life fit. We may think there are work-life challenges now, but it will get more challenging unless we choose leadership that actively supports progress on these issues.

As a working mom--I'm less interested in knowing how they do it, as how they will help us.

Interesting to see this article the day after I received an email from Momsrising.org stating that Palin's office refused to accept a letter signed by over 21,000 working women (and men) asking for her position on just these issues--health care, leave, etc.

The women who showed up at her office to hand deliver it--were told to send it in by snail mail. The Momsrising.org has now asked members to send email to PBS to ask for these important issues to be part of the vice-presidential debate.
