While evidence continues to mount that the realities of work and career paths have fundamentally and permanently changed, formal career and talent management strategies have not kept pace. This lag between recognizing that a shift has occurred and adapting organizationally and individually was obvious from the results of the two surveys I recently conducted […]

The National Study of Business Strategy and Workforce Demographics study just released today by the Center for Aging & Work at Boston College offers another piece of evidence that it is critically important for organizations and individuals pull back the lens and broaden the work+life debate to include the need for flexibility across all demographics. […]

We start the off the new year by examining the belief that work+life challenges are a “mothers’ issue.” If a stereotype is a “standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion,” then this is a perfect example. It’s true that working mothers […]

I’m going to begin by making two important points. First, after a decade in the work+life field I can honestly say that everyone I’ve met or worked with approaches their particular area of interest and focus with the best of intentions. And second, I applaud anyone brave enough to stand up and call out […]

Oh, no! I continue to pray that dads resist the rabbit hole of “daddy wars” that have distracted moms from real work+life issues for too many years. My desire to get all of us–men and women in all stages of life–to focus on the real issues prompted me to start writing my book […]

Often you can find your “fit” not by doing less work, but by working differently. However, there may be certain work+life transitions that require you to reduce the hours you work and the amount of work you do for a period of time. The question then becomes, “How can I work ‘part-time’”? […]

British Conservative Party Leader David Cameron, the 39 year old top contender to replace Tony Blair in the UK’s upcoming elections, caused a stir this week. In a controversial speech at the Google Zeitgeist Europe 2006 Conference in England, he laid out “work/life” as a key focus of his party’s political agenda. (Full transcript […]

Last week I traveled to Wisconsin to present the Career Asset Management Model (CAM) with Mike Haubrich, the financial planner who developed it. Here’s what makes it unique:
Identifies your career as a valuable asset that needs to be as actively managed as an investment portfolio.
Integrates the Work+Life “Fit” process into the traditional financial planning […]

Frequent readers know that I consciously steer clear of the ongoing “Moms versus Work” debate because I believe:
Work+Life is not just a “mothers” issue, it’s an “everyone” issue
Making it a mothers-only issue actually hurts women, not helps
It doesn’t get us any closer to a solution, but keeps us mired in the problem
Only a privileged, minority […]
