To get your manager to say "yes" to the day-to-day or formal work flexibility, have a plan that considers your needs and how your job will get done.
Managers don't want to lose good people.They are more likely to talk to you about the day-to-day or formal work flexibility you need if you come to the table with a plan.
This plan needs to explain how you will:
- Get your job done with work flexibility.
- Communicate with your manager, your customers, and your colleagues.
- Collaborate and coordinate with your team to ensure coverage.
- Handle unforeseen events that may require you to be flexible with your flexibility.
No need to explain "why" you want to telework, flex your hours, compress your workweek or reduce your schedule. In fact, it's better not to explain the reason behind your request to work differently.
Stick to "how" you will do your job and, nine times out of ten, you will get "yes" at least to a trial period.
